Registration for our teen summer reading program, Make Waves @ Your Library starts on May 3rd. Pick up a Summer Reading Program packet in the teen room to learn more about our exciting weekly programs and prizes.
This is also the time to get in those volunteer hours. We have applications available at the desk. We have positions available for our summer programs, computer assistance, and we're looking for our new Teen Library Council members for the 2010-2011 school year. Tosho-Con Tribute

Our guests ShadoCon have made us a video to thank us for welcoming them to Tosho-Con. We want to thank them for joining us for the event and for taking the time to speak to our guests. We have over a thousand pictures of the convention to go through, taken by staff and volunteers. Pictures will be made into a slide show DVD you can watch in the Teen Room. Some pictures have already been posted by teens on the Tosho-con MySpace that they maintain.Thank you again for another great year!

We're making Chain Maille!

On Tuesday, April 20th, we will be making chain maille jewelry. Teens will be provides with the materials and instructions to create different styles of chain maille they can wear or give as a gift. We will also discuss a brief history of chain maille and it's evolution through time. Space is limited. Please sign up in the teen room, or call 727-587-6715 ext 2531 to reserve your spot. A contact number or email is required.

Tosho-Con 2010 Rules

Patrons are expected to follow the library code of conduct at all times, as well as the following convention rules and regulations.

General Convention Rules-

Register with your first and last name, and include your age, especially if you are taking part in a contest. Make sure to print clearly. If we can not read your name, we can not call it.

Prop weapons intended for cosplay will be checked at registration in prior to entry into the convention and returned during the cosplay
and costume contests. All other weapons are prohibited. Remember, we
share the library with other patrons who do not know a prop from the
real thing, and for the comfort and safety of all patrons we have come
to this compromise in order to ensure a fair solution for everyone.

Prop weapons purchased from vendors must be kept in a bag for the duration of the convention.

Only those ages 13-18 will be able to register for cosplay, costume,
tournament and other contests. Though the library is open to the
public and we want everyone to be able to enjoy the convention, this
event is geared towards teens. We don't want any patron to feel
unwelcome during the convention, but only the teens will be able to
compete for prizes.

Food can only be eaten in designated areas, either in the cafe which
is located in the lobby or out in the courtyard. Drinks with a lid on
them can be carried with you through the library, such as coffee or a
bottle of soda with a cap.

Costumes- The library is open to the public, and this means children.
If your costume is inappropriate and shows nudity, you will not be
permitted to attend the convention. Also, you may be asked to remove
anything that could be considered a safety hazard until the costume or cosplay contests such as chains or leashes.

Smoking and drinking of alcohol is prohibited anywhere on library property.

Volunteers and staff can be found throughout the convention if you have any questions or concerns about the rules and regulations.

Cosplay Rules-

Cosplay is strictly prohibited outside of the cosplay contest. This
means there is to be no improv cosplay in the halls or other areas of
the convention. Posing for photo-ops is ok.

All cosplay prop-weapons must be checked in during registration and
will be returned prior to the cosplay contest. Make sure you give
yourself enough time to get your props prior to the contest.

No weapons are permitted, this includes things such as
paint-ball or BB guns. You will be asked to leave the convention if
your weapon is not a prop.

*Contestants are given 3 minutes for their presentation. After 3 minutes, they will be disqualified.

Only one entry per group.

Please keep your skit PG-13. If it gets too risque, we may end it
early, and you'll be removed from the stage.

No substances that could damage the library, other patrons, or the
costumes of other cosplayers can be used during your skit. This means
anything from water, to shaving cream.

Costume Rules-

All participants must register prior to the contest. If your entry is as a group please state so when you register, as well as the first and last name of all contestants. Though rare, it has come up. Only one prize is awarded per group if the group is chosen as a winner.

Store bought costume items are allowed, but some part of your costume
must be hand made. The more of your costume that is store bought, the
more points you will lose for originality. A reference picture is recommended but not necessary.

Prop-weapons are allowed, but must be checked-in prior to the
convention and retrieved prior to contest. Make sure you give yourself enough time prior to the contest to retrieve them. No real weapons are permitted.

Having a color picture of the character you're dressed as is not
required, but can be helpful to judges.

Nudity is not acceptable and you will be asked to leave the convention.

There is no rule that prevents a single person from winning more than one category.

No food or beverages will be allowed in this room.

Leave any bags or backpacks inside the game room door. It is your
responsibility to keep an eye on them. The library will not be
responsible for any stolen or misplaced property.

No equipment is to leave the room, for example controllers. Please
remember that the library acquires these items for teens through
donations, and some are brought in by teens for use during the
convention and they can not be replaced.

Have respect for other players, keep language clean. No verbal abuse
or fighting with other players. Anyone that can't win or lose
gracefully may be asked to leave and forfeit their place in the
tournament.

PLEASE NOTE- Many teens wish to take part in both tournaments and cosplay or costume contests. Due to this, we no longer overlap them. This means that registration for the tournaments will be limited and if you are not available when your name is called, you forfeit your spot. Your name will not be called again later. You must be in the room during the tournaments if you wish to take part. We recommend that you arrive early if you plan to take part in the tournaments. Registration will be held in the Game Room.

We're very excited that we have support in helping our convention become bigger and better every year. Our volunteers are working hard to bring new surprises, and old favorites together.

Zombie Daze and our Teens

Braiiins!!! Almost 70 teen zombies took part in the Zombie Daze program held in the teen room on Wednesday. Some decorated zombie ducks, while others played "Pin the Liver on the Zombie". We had some great Library Survival Plans, a movie and some creepy snacks.

We've started planning for the 2010 Tosho-con Anime Convention. Our theme has been chosen and this year it will be Black and White. Mascots are being drawn, volunteers are applying, and events are being planned. If you want to be part of our convention this year, please fill out an application and hand it in as soon as possible. They can be found in the teen room. The meetings are every 3rd Tuesday of the month, from 5-7. You must be from 13-18 to volunteer, no exceptions.

Join us, and our special guest Steve Turner from Giving Tree Music on November 17th at 5pm in the Children's program room for this special drum program. Drumming is easy, and you'll get a chance to learn how. We'll get the chance to make a lot of noise and find our beat.

As part of Banned Book Week, we will be showing a Banned Book Movie Marathon on Friday, October 2nd from 10am - 4pm. The movies we chose we based on books that are or have been recently contested. This year, we will be showing Bridge to Terebithia, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Blood and Chocolate. Movies will be showing in the Teen Room movie room.

With over 400 teens from all over Florida, we had another great convention this year. We want to thank everyone who came to help make it such a success. Every year you help us learn something new, and every year we grow to be something extraordinary. I hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

We want to thank the demonstrators, the vendors, the staff, the volunteers, and especially everyone who told a friend, got up at 6am on a Saturday morning or put on that costume just to make Tosho-con what it is. I think that would have to be everyone that walked in the door. Thanks!

Here is our new flier for Tosho-con, featuring the 2009 Mascots, for our East vs. West theme. Panals will have a lot to talk about, and there will be a new category for the costume contest for you American Graphic Novel fans. Of course, there will be a lot of your old favorite, and many new surprises to look forward to. Viewers choice will also feature more than anime.

West! As our mascot for the American Graphic Novel Superhero, we think our teen artist did an amazing job. Make sure to keep an eye out for East. He'll be making an appearance soon! It's not too late to be a part of the fun behind the scenes. We still have applications for volunteers. If you are available from 5 - 7pm every 3rd Tuesday of the month, we have 3 meetings left until the convention.

We're getting closer to prom night, and I wanted to give everyone a few hints of the events to come. Make sure you're ready for some trivia, the first 3 people with all the right answers will win prizes. We also have look-alike contests for Edward, Bella, Jacob and Alice. Make sure you sign up at the door if you wish to take part. You will be judged by the rest of the teens, so keep in mind, they will be judging you based on what they think those characters should look like, not necessarily the characters being portrayed in the movie. There will also be door prizes, music, dancing and food that should keep any vampire or werewolf from eying our guests. This event is open to teens, December 12th, from 5:30pm until 9:30pm. Costume, prom dress, or casual attire are all fine.

Make sure to join us for the 3rd in our Books with Bite series of book talks as we discuss Stephenie Meyer's "Eclipse" on November 5th from 4-5 pm. Our teen book talks take place in the teen movie room, so grab a bean bag chair, sit back and continue our "team Edward, team Jacob" debate. Then, only one book remains before our Breaking Dawn Prom. On December 12th, make sure you're here before the library closes it's doors. Once they're locked, the night begins, with costume contests, trivia, door prizes and Meyer's own playlist.

We're getting ready again for another great convention, and we can't do it without you. If you want to be part of our anime convention this year, make sure you fill out one of our volunteer applications in the teen room. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 5-7 pm. The theme this year will be East vs West. Come as your favorite Anime hero, or Comic Villain! Guest Speakers, Panels, Contests, Vendors, Demonstrations and more. This is your chance to be part of it all.

Metamorphosis Ball

When it came to the Metamorphosis Ball, our Largo Library teens had no shortage of imagination. From make-up, to nail polish, and masks to all things glowing, they lit up the room. They danced for hours, and even convinced me to join in, which is no small feat. Though we were all exhausted when the lights came on, many of our teens stayed to help turn our bash back into a library. Book Talk With a Bite

Starting in September, we'll be working our way through the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer as our choice for the new book club program in the teen room. Every month we'll read the next book in her series. Check back for more details, since you know I like to end a program with a bang!

Mosaic is taking submissions until July 31st, so if you are sitting on the next great short story, drawing, essay, poem or even photo and you want to enter it for a chance to see it published, come in and grab a registration form.
I know I've seen a lot of talent from you, and I can't wait to see what you submit. If what you've shown us in the past is any indication, it's going to be an amazing issue.

Metamorphosis @ your Library

Registration for the Summer Reading Program has begun. If you haven't come in for your free packet, there is still time. Next week we kick off with our first Anime program on Tuesday. There will be prizes, free food, and of course, Anime. It will also get you one step closer to your ticket to the rave-esque Metamorphosis Ball.

On Thursday, we have our Eeeek Bugs! Program. Food fear factor, drawing contest, trivia, prizes, and of course we'll get Julie to eat something nauseating. Hey, I have to have my fun too, right?

Wii Weekend!

Pick between Pokemon Battles Revolution or Wii Sports and make sure you sign up in the teen room. Space is very limited and filling up fast! Taking place in the Children's Program room on Saturday, December 8th from 1pm- 4pm, we're hoping to be able to offer this program more often based on popularity. Make sure to sign up if you're interested! This program is intended for young adults between the ages of 13 and 18.

Digital Scrapbook

This year, I was thinking of trying my hand at a DvD scrapbook for Tosho-Con. I'll be taking the pictures during the event, and we have artists to add the anime, but the snag was music. I noticed that when a school put together the yearbook DvD scrapbook, they could only play clips of a song or they could face problems with copyrights. It always drove me nuts that they would jump from one song to the next. I thought it was a good time to ask for a favor.

Scott Gallagher of Seattle band Key Note Speaker agreed to try his
hand at some music for us. The only catch is that he hasn't had a lot of anime influence. We'll just have to come up with a list of "must see" to change that. I'm sure you guys will have a few ideas!

The Cafe Opens It's Doors!

Don't forget to sign up for the Anime Cafe! The sign up sheet can be found in the Teen Room. On the menu for December we'll be making origami wallscrolls and watching an episode of Pumpkin Scissors. We'll also enjoy a cafe favorite. That will take place on Tuesday, December 11th, from 6pm - 8pm and is open to young adults from the ages of 13-18.

This program runs the second Tuesday of every month, so be sure to sign up early. It will take place in the Children's Program Room.

This is our new desktop on the teen room computers.
It was designed for us for free by Shon Whalen. We're hoping it will encourage you to volunteer to join a Tosho-Con Committee. We still have a lot of openings that need some help. Do you like Video Games? Cosplay? Good with PR? We probably have just the thing for you. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 20th, from 6-8pm. It will take place in the Children's program room. If you are unable to make this meeting due to the upcoming holidays, meet with a teen staff member.
